Currently, one of the biggest concerns of the vehicles brands or equipment with
thermal engines is the reduction of emissions into the atmosphere, namely those from
fossil fuels. Because of this, more and more companies invests in the development of
new technologies in this area, being one of them Shell plc. This is a British
multinational company that produces and sells products derived from fossil fuels. Shell
promotes a competition, called Shell Eco-Marathon, whose main objective is the
participation of teams with the objective of design and build a vehicle that uses the least
amount of fuel to travel a certain distance.
The UBICAR team from the University of Beira Interior (UBI) has been participating
for some years in the Shell Eco-Marathon competition. In a developed project it was
detected that the clutch used has a relatively high slip speed and that this could be
reduced.
Centrifugal clutches only operate at a certain operating point. Heat engine
manufacturers tend to regulate and calibrate the clutches so that they operate at
angular speeds between the maximum torque and the maximum power of a respective
engine. The clutch used by the UBIAN19's engine, which is a centrifugally driven multidisc clutch, suffers from the mentioned problem: excessive slip time and high slip
speed.
The objective of this dissertation is to reduce the slippage of a centrifugal driven clutch
for a lower engine rotation speed than the original. Through an experimental study,
where the iterations were analysed.
In carrying out the tests, an inertia dynamometer existing at the UBI was adapted,
which was been built for a less powerful engine. The adaptation consisted of calculating
and redoing the coupling system, having validated the dynamometer before carrying
out the tests to study the clutch
Inertial Dynamometer for Shell Eco-marathon Engine: Validation
This paper aims to validate the construction of an inertia dynamometer. These types of dynamometers allow easy characterization of internal combustion engines. To validate the dynamometer, tests were carried out with the same engine (Honda GX 160) installed in the UBIAN car and kart, which after calculating the inertia and measuring engine acceleration in each test performed, allows to create the torque characteristic curve from the engine.
